Tonight, however, is a little different. My mind is racing. I spent most of the day and night reading and watching everything I could see related to the virus. Mainstream media coverage, conservative polling, libertarian analysis, medical research, scientific modeling, and political posturing — and some of it from sources around the world. (Though I avoid fringe and conspiracy sites like the…er…plague.) I am intellectually far less confident than I should be – given the sheer volume of information I’ve assimilated – than I have been to any since the emergence of this crisis time have been. So contradictory is much of the information being disseminated by the sources that I would consider the most credible. While I may not be convinced of anything, I am fully aware of my own inherent instincts as I process the following: 1- People are dying from this disease and social distancing will certainly save lives. Nevertheless, there is a large gap between the immediately qualified scientists. One side is calling for a much longer period of social distancing – through mandatory business closures and tighter enforced stay-at-home orders. The other side says we cannot let fear of “fatalities” prevent us from facing the difficult task of building the “herd immunity” necessary to prevent this from becoming a seasonal crisis – over and over again. 2 – The notion that “if we just save one life then the shutdowns will be worth it” is obviously bulls**t of the highest order. If that were our guiding philosophy of how we manage all human activity, we would long ago have called for the banning of cars, alcohol, tobacco and sugar – with extreme prejudice – as the individual and combined annual death toll caused by just these four Items eclipse anything COVID-19 has in store. 3 – The government can put a $1200 band-aid on the wound, but that band-aid itself is infected with a Trojan horse bacterium that has a history of destroying currencies and economies and bringing nations to their knees. 4 – Party tribalism and finger pointing tear us apart. “War” typically unites us against a commonly identified enemy. The “war on COVID-19” is having the opposite effect — because instead of identifying the virus as that common enemy, many Americans have chosen whoever is on the “other side” of the Trump divide to pose the greater long-term threat to be . (I can’t believe some of the virulent hostility I’m seeing on my social media feeds.) 5 – According to a new survey by the Kaiser Family Foundation, 2 (37% of men) say the pandemic is affecting their mental health impacted, with 19% saying it had a ‘big impact’. We’re not even close to ending all of the things that are causing this mounting, parallel mental health crisis, as ruptures and breakdowns of all sex doll torsos keep happening and making headlines. 6 – Don’t kid yourself. . . Submitting to common sense recommendations for social distancing and knowing that we can’t keep this up for more than just a few days – before we do far more damage than the virus will do on its own – are not mutually exclusive. There must be something soon – no matter how painful it is in the short term – to save both our freedoms and our prosperity
