ll of Saigon, this image stands as a symbol of this point in history. In it, an American helps stranded Vietnamese escape to safety aboard his helicopter. He was never identified. This man was my grandfather. If you visit his house, there is another similar picture hanging on his wall. It’s a close-up taken at the same time as the photo above and his face is clearly visible. So how did he get there? My grandfather is a 2nd generation American missionary in Vietnam. He was born there and so were his children. He continued his service during the war as he had done for years. Then he had to evacuate. He could not abandon the Vietnamese only to suffer a terrible fate at the hands of the Viet Cong for their Christian faith and American sympathies. So what did he do? Still dressed in the usual black dress pants and white short-sleeved shirt then-customary for Vietnam missionaries, he persuaded a friend to land his helicopter on the roof of a nearby building. It was the pilot who took the picture that now hangs on my grandparents’ wall. They loaded up as many as they could and transported them to safety. I don’t know what happened after that because my grandfather is very humble and didn’t want anyone to know this story. He prefers quiet heroism to glory, like many of his generation. In fact, I only know because my mother overheard a conversation between him and my grandmother one night and asked grandma to explain the story to her. For this reason I have not included his name or identifiable details where avoidable. He recently suffered a stroke and is now confined to a wheelchair, but up to this point he has never stopped working. He traveled back and forth between Vietnam, China and even a little bit of Russia up until last year and spoke quite often in other Vietnamese and American churches around the world to raise awareness and share experiences of what Vietnam is like. To this day he regrets not being able to continue his passion. I am sure he is my connection to many other missionaries (I know I am related to many, many American and Norwegian missionaries). And he never stopped doing the work of the kingdom. That, my friends, is the definition of badass. Edit: As I explained above, I can’t post my grandfather’s name or close-up pictures of him because he doesn’t want his identity to be known. Thanks! Edit #2: My grandfather recently passed away. I am sure he has accompanied many stories of heroism, faith and courage throughout his many years, all overflowing with vitality and determination to carry out the work of Christ. After his death, I visited his wife, my grandmother, at her old home. I was able to snap a photo of the second photo I mentioned hanging on her wall.
